Hohai university is a key university under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education of China, with the discipline of water resources as its distinctive feature, and with emphasis laid on engineering and attention paid to the coordinate development of science, engineering , economics , management , liberal arts and law. The history of Hohai University dates back to Hohai Civil Engineering School, the first institution of higher learning which aimed to cultivate technical personnel in the field of water resources. The university was named East China Technical Institute of Water Resources between 1952 and 1985 and resumed the name of Hohai University in 1985. Up to now, the university consists of 13 colleges, 4 independent departments and a graduate school with 3 state
key disciplines, 8 ministerial and independent key disciplines, 5 post-doctorate programs, 33 Ph.D programs, 73 master’s programs, one specialized academic degree of MBA, 16 master’s degrees of engineering and 46 undergraduate programs , among which the disciplines of water resources engineering and civil engineering rank among the best in china. The discipline and specialty of water resources is characterized by its complete range of relevant subjects and solid strength of teaching and research.
The main campus of Hohai University is located at the northern foot of Qingliang hill in Nanjing, and the other two campuses in Changzhou and Jiangning district of Nanjing, covering a total area of 2302 Mu. The scenic attractions, green trees and fragrant flowers everywhere in the three campuses create a special campus culture and have earned the titles of “flower garden” and “green campus”.
With the support of the Ministry of Education , the Ministry of Water Resource and the government of Jiangsu Province, and with the construction of “the ninth five-year plan”, “the tenth five-year plan” and ”211 project”, Hohai University has improved the conditions of the school, expanded the scale of enrollment, developed the form of education , and optimized the structure of certain disciplines, and thus the comprehensive strength of scientific research and the quality of training of the university have been improved. Currently, Hohai University is still on the construction of “the eleventh five-year plan” and ”211 project”.
Taking “hard working and plain living, seeking truth from the facts, setting strict demands and having the courage to explore ” as its motto, Hohai University has trained 70000 graduates, the majority of whom have become the main strength of the nation in the fields of water resources, energy resources, communications and in the development of local economy. At present about 30000 students are enrolled, including over 5600 Master and Ph.D students, nearly 18000 undergraduate students, 120 foreign students or more and about 8500 adult students,. The university has a faculty of over 1700 teachers and researchers, among whom there are one member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering , and 2 “Changjing scholar” professors. In addition to that, 10 academicians are appointed to be doctorate supervisors of Hohai University.
